In 1992, the National charter school movement began in St. Paul, Minnesota and more than 20 years later there are more than 5600 charter schools in more than 42 states with more than 2 million students attending. Today, the movement is about making education better by allowing students, parents, teachers, and administrators freedom and flexibility in their school while holding them accountable for increasing student achievement.

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools is the leading national nonprofit organization committed to advancing the charter school movement. Their mission is to lead public education to unprecedented levels of academic achievement for all students by fostering a strong charter sector. The Alliance provides assistance to state charter school associations and resource centers, develops and advocates for improved public policies, and serves as the united voice for this large and diverse movement.
